William Hogarth, A Midnight Modern Conversation, an etching and engraving on copper signed in plate at the lower edge, in excellent condition, image size 63.5 × 48 cm, origin United Kingdom, 18th century classical style.
Description from the seller
An iconic satirical masterpiece: the famous Bacchanalian scene of William Hogarth in a London coffeehouse. Acquire a timeless piece of British art history with this exceptional drypoint and copper engraving by the undisputed father of modern satirical illustration, William Hogarth (1697-1664). First conceived between 1732 and 1733, "A Midnight Modern Conversation" remains one of Hogarth’s most celebrated and universally recognizable compositions. The scene is a masterful example of dark humor and social critique, set in the chaotic, smoky atmosphere of a London tavern or punch club (often identified with St. John’s Coffee House). Hogarth brilliantly depicts a heterogeneous group of gentlemen, politicians, and ecclesiastics at various stages of intoxication around a central table on which sits a large steaming bowl of punch. Each character is a psychological study: from the figure fainting on the floor overturning a bottle, to the solemn magistrate pouring the wine, to the dandy dozing on the left. The composition is flanked along the lower edge by moralizing verses precisely inscribed in old English type. This particular historical print is beautifully preserved, with excellent ink contrast that highlights the incredible richness of cross-hatching and the expressive faces typical of Hogarth’s personal engravings. Professionally mounted in an elegant ivory passe-partout with a delicate inner gold filet and a refined solid wood frame, this engraving is ready to enrich a prestigious corporate office, a private law office, or a residence’s classic library. Excellent condition, Material: Heavy old paper (Laid paper / Handmade paper). Technique: Etching and engraving on copper. Signed on the plate at the lower margin of the image (
