Barlach was one of the most influential Expressionist sculptors, printmakers, and playwrights in 20th-century Germany, a victim of the Nazi regime's selection of degenerate art. His work stands out for capturing the deepest human emotions through simplified forms with a unique and characteristic style, always imbued with mysticism.
