Robert Pothecary
Untitled
Mixed Media
1996
Image dimensions 110 x 90 cm
Robert Pothecary (Southampton, 1963) is a British painter who has lived and worked in Sint-Oedenrode, the Netherlands since 1986.
A major theme in his painting is archaeology, an interest he has had since his youth. As a child he also dug 'excavations' in various places in South England in the hope of finding something from the past. His interest was also sparked by his grandparents' walled garden, who lived in a Victorian house.
The interest in archaeology grew when, after his studies at Southampton Art College, he began study trips to places with numerous interesting excavation sites such as Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Turkey. All these impressions eventually influenced his work. After first drawing all the impressions on preparatory sketches, these were ultimately incorporated into his paintings. In his homeland he also worked after his studies for Zillwoods Ltd, a design company specializing in making logos.
