Description from the seller
Large Japanese Blue & White Porcelain Charger – Hand-Painted Floral & Bamboo Decoration – Signed – 38 cm – Early 20th Century
An impressive and unusually large Japanese blue and white porcelain charger, entirely hand-painted in rich underglaze cobalt blue. The decoration features an elegant composition of alternating ornamental panels filled with bamboo, flowering branches and stylised foliage surrounding a finely executed central medallion depicting flowering plants and aquatic vegetation.
The decoration is executed with exceptional precision and displays excellent tonal variation in the cobalt, ranging from deep sapphire blue to delicate washes that create remarkable depth and contrast. The broad geometric border and carefully balanced radial composition are characteristic of high-quality Japanese decorative porcelain inspired by classical Arita traditions.
The reverse bears a hand-painted underglaze blue workshop mark enclosed within a double square cartouche. The charger originates from an old Norwegian estate belonging to collectors of Japanese antiques and was acquired together with several comparable Japanese porcelain pieces collected before approximately 1960.
Its unusually large size, substantial weight, refined craftsmanship and striking visual impact make it an excellent collector’s object as well as a superb display piece.
