Willem de Zwart, Cows, an etching depicting cows among trees in a naturalist-impressionist landscape, hand-signed on the plate and below the work, in good condition, Netherlands, 19th century, impressionism, framed, 53 × 63 cm.
Description from the seller
The work concerns an etching of cows between the trees, signed both on the plate and beneath the work.
Wilhelmus Henricus Petrus Johannes (Willem) de Zwart (The Hague, May 16, 1862 – there, December 11, 1931) was a Dutch painter, draftsman, etcher, watercolorist and plate painter. His oeuvre encompasses a wide variety of subjects, including landscapes, cityscapes, portraits and still lifes, executed in a naturalistic-impressionist style. Within the Hague School, De Zwart occupied a special position thanks to his exuberant and powerful use of color. At the same time, his work shows a clear affinity with Amsterdam impressionism, in which urban life and the human figure take center stage. In his choice of subjects he aligns with the Hague School, while his style and palette bring him closer to the Amsterdam impressionists. For this reason he is also sometimes called the ‘Hague Breitner’.
Works by Willem de Zwart can be found among others in the collections of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag and the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.
