Original copperplate engraving by Giuseppe Vasi, titled Porta Cavalleggeri e Posterula, Italian architectural Baroque scene, 28 x 40 cm, dating to the 19th century, in discrete condition and unsigned.
Description from the seller
Splendid and fascinating original engraving -- an etching and engraving print on contemporary laid paper -- executed by the famous engraver and architect Giuseppe Vasi (1710–1782). The work is drawn from Book III of the monumental work “Delle Magnificenze di Roma antica e moderna,” published in 1753, in the section dedicated to the gates and walls of Rome.
The view offers a historically precise and evocative glimpse of eighteenth-century Rome. In the foreground, the historic Porta Cavalleggeri rises up, animated by figures in period attire. In the background, with impeccable perspective, dominates the majestic Dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, flanked by the Pontifical Palace, by a portion of the Palace of the Holy Office, and by the Cavalleggeri Quarter.
At the bottom of the composition, within the editorial space, is inscribed the author’s signature “G. Vasi dis. e inc.” together with the numbered caption identifying the main places of interest. In the upper right is the progressive plate number (45).
The condition is excellent; the sheet presents a very crisp ink impression.
