AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Fine antique copperplate engraving depicting a "Classical Landscape with Saint Jerome in Meditation" (also known as Landscape with the Philosopher). Artist / Inventor: Annibale Carracci (Bologna, 1560 – Rome, 1609) Era / Scope: 17th - 18th Century. High-quality vintage edition derived from the famous Carracci prototype. The rendering of foliage and rocks closely recalls the circle of Giovan Francesco Grimaldi (Il Bolognese). Subject: Splendid example of an "ideal landscape" of Bologna school. On the right, the holy hermit is portrayed in a melancholic and thoughtful pose under a large tree. The scene unfolds in a vast natural setting described with miniature-like care, among watercourses, wooded backdrops and mountains in the background pierced by flocks of birds. Technique: Etching and burin on laid paper. Condition: Good overall condition considering its age. Slight natural yellowing and light foxing. The sheet presents central horizontal and vertical folds (probable sign of old binding or archival folding, see photo). Margins intact. Crisp impression with excellent contrasts. (Please view the detailed photos carefully for a proper assessment).
