Description from the seller
Jan Cremer – Tuscany
Wood engraving in a limited and signed edition. In this work, Jan Cremer depicts the Tuscan landscape with bold, expressive lines and a strong sense of rhythm and light. The composition breathes the Mediterranean atmosphere that is so characteristic of his Italian period.
A characteristic graphic work in which nature, energy and craft come together.
Jan Cremer, writer and artist, was born in 1940 in Enschede. His father died in 1942, causing Jan's upbringing to fall entirely to his mother. Jan's mother, Rosza Csordás Szomorkay, was Hungarian and studied at the conservatory in Budapest. After the war, Jan Cremer was placed by child protection in foster homes and colony houses. In the fifties he had various jobs, served with the marines and worked for a time as a deckhand on the high seas. In 1958 he spent a few months training at the art academies in Arnhem and The Hague. Cremer lived for some time on Ibiza and moved to New York in 1964. Thereafter he alternated living in America and Europe. As a writer, Cremer quickly became famous with “I, Jan Cremer” (1964). It is a picaresque novel with sex, violence and adventure. Consequently, the literary merit of his authorship was not regarded very highly by everyone. The novel was kept out of libraries for a long time. “I, Jan Cremer” appeared in many languages. In addition to novels, Jan Cremer wrote travelogues and plays. The art of Jan Cremer consists of paintings, graphics and gouaches and often depicts Dutch, and also Italian, landscapes in vivid colors.
