EXTRA ARTIST INFO:
Ward Lernout (May 3, 1931 – December 21, 2019) was a Flemish painter, born in Geluwe, West Flanders.
He received his artistic training at the Municipal Academy for Fine Arts of Menen, where he studied under painters F. Wallecan and E. Van Overberghe. After a long stay in Africa he settled in 1964 in Tervuren. Until 1990 he worked in the advertising and press world, but from 1970 he exhibited his work annually in various art galleries.
Lernout’s oeuvre is characterized by a deep connection to the Flemish painting tradition, combined with a modern approach. His use of strong lines and a rich, varied color palette expressed the simple rural life in his paintings. He managed to bridge the past and present, capturing the beauty of a changing nature.
His work has been exhibited in numerous national and international galleries and museums, including the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, the Centre d’Art du Paradou in France, and the Casa de Cultura in Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid. Additionally, in 2001 he was selected for the exhibition 'Im Zeichen der Ebene und des Himmels', organized by European artist colonies in Nuremberg.
