Rolex Oyster Perpetual Ref. 6085, a 34 mm automatic men’s watch from the 1950s with a gold/steel case.
Description from the seller
This classic timepiece is an early Rolex Oyster Perpetual Ref. 6085, produced in the 1950s, featuring an early bubble caseback and a classic 34mm size. It boasts a two-tone two-tone design highly representative of the era, paired with a stainless steel case, a smooth/guilloché gold bezel, and a gold crown. It underwent a cleaning and servicing in June 2026.
Gold Crown:
The most collectible detail of this watch is its extremely rare early Rolex "Super Oyster" non-screw-down crown. This crown is clearly engraved with "ROLEX + SUPER OYSTER". Rolex only produced this type of crown for a very short period, from approximately 1951 to 1953, making it extremely rare and valuable.
Dial:
The Tropical Textured Dial, after decades of natural aging, exhibits an extremely even tropical patina, creating a highly collectible and uniformly mottled brown oxidation. In the vintage watch world, it's revered by enthusiasts as the "Tropical Dial."
Hands:
The dial is adorned with three-dimensional gold arrow-shaped hour markers, one of the most famous design aesthetics of early 1950s vintage Rolex watches, exuding a retro-gentlemanly feel. Paired with classic Alpha-shaped gold hands, it presents elegant geometric lines.
Movement:
In the era of the "Semi-Bubbleback" movement, to which your Ref. 6085 belongs, Rolex did not have the custom of engraving the movement model on the bridges. At that time, Rolex believed that the most important movement number for consumers and watchmakers was "the movement's unique identifier," which is what you see on the bridge as "F 56178."
Case:
The "Bubbleback" is one of the most legendary and sought-after vintage watch families in Rolex history, and a key contributor to Rolex's modern dominance in "waterproof, automatic winding" watches.
To maintain the elegant proportions of the bezel and ensure sufficient space within the case for the rotor to rotate freely without jamming, Rolex's brilliant watchmakers decided to make the stainless steel case back a rounded, convex shape, creating more space.
