Original work by Jan Cremer. In honor of his exhibition: Jan Cremer as Painter (The Hague period 1958-1962) at Galerie Nouvelles Imges in The Hague.
Cremer has produced a lovely work in several exhibition folders.
Jan Cremer, writer and artist, was born in 1940 in Enschede. His father died in 1942, causing Jan’s upbringing to be entirely in the care of his mother. Jan’s mother, Rosza Csordás Szomorkay, was Hungarian and studied at the conservatory in Budapest. After the war, Jan Cremer was placed by child protection in foster homes and colony houses. In the 1950s he had various jobs, served with the marines and spent some time as a deckhand on the high seas. In 1958 he spent several months studying at the art academies in Arnhem and The Hague. Cremer lived for a time on Ibiza and left for New York in 1964. Thereafter he lived alternately in America and Europe. As a writer Cremer instantly became famous with “I, Jan Cremer” (1964). It is a picaresque novel with sex, violence and adventure. Consequently the literary merit of his authorship was not regarded by everyone as very high. The novel was kept out of libraries for a long time. “I, Jan Cremer” appeared in many languages. In addition to novels, Jan Cremer wrote travel reports and plays. The art of Jan Cremer consists of paintings, graphics and gouaches and often features Dutch, and also Italian, landscapes in vivid colors.
