This original etching by the renowned Dutch-Belgian artist Jakob Smits is an absolute treasure for collectors. Smits, the central figure of the Molse School, is worldwide known for his masterful depiction of the simple Kempen farmer’s life and his unique contrasts between light and dark.

The etching shows a characteristic, atmospheric Kempen village scene with typical mud-brick stables and thatched roofs. In the foreground are subtly drawn figures and a horse and cart on the yard. The expressive, dynamic cloudscape – so characteristic of Smits’ graphic work – lends the scene beautiful depth and a melancholic atmosphere.

• Condition: In good, authentic condition with a clear, deep plate edge (marginal edge) visible on the reverse side. The margins are intact. Only the paper edge around the etching shows some signs of aging.
