David Hutter (1930–1990)

British painter and watercolourist, and a notable figure in the early gay rights movement. Hutter was active in the Gay Liberation Front in London from its founding in 1970, and in 1974 co-authored, with Andrew Hodges, With Downcast Gays: Aspects of Homosexual Self-Oppression — a landmark text of the period.

Working principally in watercolour from the 1960s onwards, Hutter became known for his flower studies and male nudes, alongside a substantial body of landscape work. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, held numerous solo exhibitions across London, and was the subject of a retrospective at The Bloxham Galleries in 2000.

Forty of his watercolours were published in 1984 as Nudes and Flowers (Gay Men's Press), with an introduction by Edward Lucie-Smith, one of Britain's most prolific and influential art critics, who died on 11 July 2026. The limited edition of 100 slipcased copies, signed by both artist and critic, is now scarce and much sought after — a measure of the regard in which Hutter's work continues to be held.
