Description from the seller

Clemens Briels, born in Son in 1946, is a highly sought-after artist both domestically and abroad. His artworks are part of various renowned art collections and he was elected as the first Dutch artist to be crowned Official Olympic Artist for the Winter Games in Salt Lake City in 2002.

Behind Clemens Briels' artworks lies always a story; his works are small anecdotes from a society that is opposed. Briels developed his own style, ANTIPODISME: he imagines the opposite of the stereotype, the learned. The viewer is confronted with another, fanciful view of everyday things and is often surprised as a result.

Briels depicts his experiences gathered in the Orient, the Caribbean and North and South America. In addition, traditional Central and South American music is an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration. The Cuban son, mambo, merengue and the souk, the music tones drizzled with a light erotic sauce, compel him to create intriguing paintings.

Clemens Briels' artworks are never bound to time and reflect universal themes, cosmopolitan imaginings of daily life. Briels translates his experiences in his own way, in his own unique fantasy world. Color is the tool, the story is his message. The artist stimulates the viewer's imagination by showing different images than what we are supposed to see. Because our stereotypes are learned and not imaginative interpretations of the surrounding things and events, the viewer is confronted with surprises.
