Pericle Fazzini – Lot of three original etchings, copies 8/75, 26/75 and Print Proof

Pericle Fazzini (Grottammare, May 4, 1913 – Rome, December 4, 1987) was one of the leading figures of Italian sculpture in the twentieth century. The present lot brings together three of his original graphic works created with the etching technique, all printed by Luciano Bongiovanni on Rosaspina Fabriano paper for artistic prints.

The three works are presented without an original title documented; to facilitate identification they are conventionally referred to in this description as “Seagull,” “The rocks” and “The waves of the sea,” purely descriptive denominations related to the subjects depicted.

The first etching, here designated as “Seagull,” is copy 8/75. The sheet measures 49.5 × 34.5 cm, while the printed image measures about 14 × 19 cm.
The second, designated as “The rocks,” is copy 26/75, with a sheet of 25 × 35 cm and a printed image of about 9.5 × 15.5 cm.
Completing the lot is “The waves of the sea,” indicated as Print Proof, with a sheet of 25 × 35 cm and a printed image of about 16 × 12 cm.
The first two works thus belong to a numbered edition of 75 copies, while the third is a Print Proof, as indicated on the copy itself. The signature and numbering are those visible in the lot photographs.

All three etchings were printed by Luciano Bongiovanni on Rosaspina Fabriano paper, a high-quality paper traditionally used in artistic printing and particularly suitable for intaglio techniques. The provenance is from the private collection of Francesco Bongiovanni.

The presence of a print proof alongside two numbered copies constitutes a point of particular interest for the graphic collector, as it allows placement beside the ordinary edition of a copy that belongs to the process of realization and verification of the print. The lot therefore offers not only three graphic works by an important Italian twentieth-century artist, but also a small testimony of the practice of art printing and its artisanal production.

Certificates of authenticity, purchase invoices or references to catalogues raisonnés for the individual copies are not available. The available documentation consists of the works themselves, the signatures and visible numbers, and information relating to their provenance and printing.

The works are in good condition, considering their nature as prints on paper. There are slight signs of conservation and handling on the margins of the sheets and some minor irregularities of the paper, without defects sufficient to compromise the legibility of the images or the normal use of the works. No restoration work is noted. The photographs are an integral part of the description and allow precise assessment of the condition of the individual sheets.
