Giorgio Ghisi, Venere e Adone, an etching printed in 1570, measuring 31.8 × 22.5 cm, Italian origin, in good condition, signed on the plate.
Description from the seller
Original burin by Giorgio Ghisi, taken from a work by Teodoro Ghisi. circa 1570. Very rare work.
Dimensions: 31.8 x 22.5 cm
The rarity of this engraving is also due to the loss of the printing matrix, destroyed during the pontificate of Leo XII and in the years immediately following; in those years the Roman Calcography launched a strict program of "purification" and censorship of subjects deemed lascivious or contrary to religious morality.
On handmade paper with watermark, in excellent condition (see photos).
Probably a VI state (of VII) with the address of van Aelst erased (lower left) and before the annotations on the lower right.
Venus and Adonis seated in a landscape, she is shown with her back to us and kisses his cheek, a putto above pulls a curtain to reveal the lovers and another below plays with a hare, three dogs on the right.
Bibliographic references:
- Bartsch / Le Peintre graveur (XV.402.42)
