Description from the seller
Jan Toorop (1858-1928) was a Dutch artist, born in Java, who became known for his Symbolist and Art Nouveau works. After his studies in Amsterdam and Brussels he developed a versatile style, ranging from Impressionism to Pointillism and ultimately Symbolism. His masterpieces, such as The Three Brides (1893) and the Delft Slipper Oil (Delftsche Slaolie) poster (1894), combine decorative lines with mystical and religious themes. After his conversion to Catholicism in 1905, he focused mainly on religious art. Toorop had a major influence on Dutch art, and his work can be seen in leading museums.
Jan Toorop excelled in studies and drawings, which often formed the basis for his paintings and graphic works. His drawings show his masterful command of line, detail, and composition. He often used pencil, charcoal, or pen to capture subjects such as human figures, portraits, and symbolic scenes. These studies, including this work, provide insight into his creative process.
