Description from the seller
Graphic work, screen print on paper, “Untitled”, Pablo Serrano, contemporary art, 1976, Spain.
Excellent screen print made by Pablo Serrano (1908-1985) for the Carpeta Paradiso of 1976.
The screen print depicts an abstract figure framed on a bright pink background, which marks the character of the work in which color stands out over form. In the center, a light gray silhouette with an irregular edge and on top of it, another silhouette in a darker shade of gray forming a perfect circle. Above it, a yellow and white sphere.
Pablo Serrano was born in Teruel in 1908, and studied sculpture in Zaragoza and Barcelona. In the year 192 he moved to Argentina and later to Uruguay. His stay in Latin America was very fruitful; he created a lot of work and won several important prizes there. In 1955 he returned to Spain, and two years later cofounded the Grupo El Paso together with artists of the caliber of Manolo Millares, Rafael Canogar or Antonio Saura, who during a brief period developed an avant-garde art never seen in Spain (especially after the Civil War), drawing inspiration from movements such as American Abstract Expressionism or the Parisian art currents. Expressiveness, color, and critique of the Spanish political situation at that time were emphasized.
Serrano was a sculptor, but during his mature period he became interested in graphic work. This particular screen print comes from the Carpeta Paradiso, produced by the Circuito de Obra Gráfica Paradiso, in Valladolid between October 1975 and June 1976. Each folder gathers nine graphic works by Leopoldo del Brío, Pablo Ransa, Cristóbal Gabarrón, Andrés Trapiello, Benito Mauleón, Pablo Serrano, Faik Husein, Martín de Vidales and Rafael Canogar. 200 copies were made of each work, numbered and signed by the artists.
