This masterful work occupied Chagall for two long years. The octogenarian artist became passionate about this prestigious commission and is forever etched in the piece with his self-portrait at the palette beside the Eiffel Tower (see photo).

This work was issued for the portfolio celebrating the realization and inauguration of the Opéra de Paris ceiling by Marc Chagall in 1964. It is annotated Première maquette en couleurs non retenue.

Very good condition - usual mid-fold (as issued) with the text and image on the back (as issued - see photo) and a small abrasion in the lower left corner, light staining on the back (see photo)
