ABOUT THE ARTIST

Juan Alcalde (1918–2020) was a Spanish painter and printmaker whose work is distinguished by its poetic realism, melancholic atmosphere, and deep sense of solitude. Born in Madrid, he studied at the School of Arts and Crafts and later at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. His artistic career was profoundly shaped by the Spanish Civil War, which led to years of exile in France and Venezuela before he eventually settled in Paris, where he became associated with the renowned Spanish School of Paris.

Alcalde developed a highly personal style, depicting urban landscapes, circus scenes, and everyday life through a refined geometric structure and subtle palette. Among his major achievements are his recognition as one of the last representatives of the Spanish School of Paris, numerous international exhibitions, and the Gold Medal awarded by the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors in 2016. His work remains an important contribution to twentieth-century Spanish art.
