Description of the artwork and subject:
Not a waving flag, but a flag falling. In Untitled (Falling Flag), Robert Longo returns to a symbol that has accompanied his entire career — the stars and stripes of the American flag — to make of it, this time, a gesture of emptiness rather than celebration. The work stems from his recent reflection on democracy and power, and the artist himself described it as "a curtain that falls, behind which there is nothing."
The flag occupies less than half of the image. The rest is absolute black, built in the original drawing through successive layers of charcoal on white paper — the same accumulation method that has always characterized Longo's practice, here brought to an intensity almost to the point of totalization. The void is not a neutral background: it is the true subject of the work.
The serigraphic process faithfully translates this complexity: 9 color passes in grayscale separation, to render the entire material density of the original charcoal in a hyperreal grain that only serigraphy can achieve with this precision.
Original artwork, in pristine condition, signed and hand-numbered by Robert Longo along the lower edge.
