Paulus Potter (Enkhuizen, 1625 – Amsterdam, 1654) was a Dutch painter, specializing in animals and landscapes.
Paulus Potter was baptized on 20 November 1625 in Enkhuizen in the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands.
He studied painting with his father Pieter Potter in Enkhuizen. In The Hague he met his wife and became acquainted with the Dutch elite. He later moved to Amsterdam. Here Potter was invited by the famous physician Nicolaes Tulp, to whom he painted a portrait of his son Dirck Tulp. In 1646 he became a member of the painters’ guild.
Although his artistic life was brief, it was very intense; Potter painted over 130 paintings.
He died in 1654, aged 28, of tuberculosis. He was buried on 17 January 1654 in Amsterdam.
