Biography
Antonio Possenti was a renowned Italian painter and illustrator, born in Lucca in 1933. From a young age, he showed notable artistic talent in drawing and an interest in fantastical storytelling, which he maintained throughout his career. After completing his classical studies, he pursued self-teaching, deepening his drawing and illustration. His formative influences are varied and wide-ranging, thanks to his intellectual curiosity and the rich literary and artistic culture he absorbed since childhood through his family. His education spans from Greco-Roman classicism to modern and contemporary art, with a particular preference for experiences with a fantastical and engaging flair.
Antonio Possenti traveled extensively, coming into contact with diverse cultures and personalities, but always returned to Lucca, a city he deeply loves, where he established his studio in the heart of the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. This magical place, which gathers remnants of his worldly experiences like a vast suitcase, became the source of inspiration for many of his works.
During his career, Antonio Possenti exhibited in important Italian and international galleries, including Gianferrari, Il Milione, Appiani Arte 32 in Milan, Marescalchi e Forni in Bologna, Davico e Biasutti in Turin, Il Traghetto in Venice, Poggiali e Forconi in Florence, L'immagine in Arezzo, Aminta in Siena, Philippe Guimiot in Brussels, Rutzmoser in Munich, East West Gallery in London and Art Diagonal in Barcelona, to name just a few.
He also participated in numerous international art events, such as the Bologna, Cologne, and Milan Art Fairs, the Basel Art Fair in Basel, FIAC in Paris, the Los Angeles Art Fair, Art Miami in Miami Beach, the New York International Art Fair, Tuyap in Istanbul, the Gent Art Fair, ARCO in Madrid, Stockholm, St'Art in Strasbourg, and BART in Barcelona.
Antonio Possenti's works are present in important private and public collections in Italy and abroad, testifying to the appreciation and significance of his artistic talent. Critics, art historians, writers, and intellectuals have written about him, recognizing his substantial contribution to the artistic field.
Antonio Possenti was a member of the Academy of Letters, Sciences and Arts of Lucca and of the Academy of Drawing Art of Florence. He received numerous prizes and recognitions throughout his career, consolidating his status as one of the most important Italian artists of his time. Antonio Possenti left us in the summer of 2016 after a long illness. His artistic legacy, characterized by an original, open, and poetic language, continues to be appreciated and studied, keeping his memory alive in the panorama of contemporary art.
