Ugo La Pietra (1938) - Cerchiamo la forma

Opera realized, produced in 35 copies in 1976 for the Cooperativa di Via Maroncelli in Milan — a self-managed space by a group of artists including La Pietra, Fabro, Vaccari, Spagnulo, Tadini, Trotta, Boriani, De Vecchi, Carrega, Nagasawa, etc. The work, handmade, is composed of a photographic part and a drawn part. Born in Bussi sul Tirino (Pescara) in 1938, originally from Arpino (Frosinone), he lives and works in Milan, where in 1964 he graduated in Architecture at the Politecnico.

Ugo La Pietra, architect by training, since 1960 defines himself as a researcher in the system of communication and the visual arts, moving simultaneously in the territories of art and design. An indefatigable experimenter, he has traversed several currents (from sign painting to conceptual art, from Narrative Art to artist’s cinema) and used multiple media, conducting research that has materialized in the theory of the “System disequilibrante” — an autonomous expression within Radical Design — and in important sociological themes such as “La casa telematica” (MoMA, New York, 1972 – Fiera di Milano, 1983), “Rapporto tra Spazio reale e Spazio virtuale” (Triennale di Milano, 1979, 1992), “La casa neoeclettica” (Abitare il tempo, 1990), “Cultura Balneare” (Centro Culturale Cattolica, 1985/95). He has communicated his work through many exhibitions in Italy and abroad, and in several shows at the Triennale di Milano, the Venice Biennale, the Musée d’Art Contemporain in Lyon, the FRAC Museum in Orléans, the Faenza Ceramics Museum, the Ragghianti Foundation in Lucca, the Mudima Foundation in Milan, the MA*GA Museum in Gallarate. He has always supported, in a critical way, with works and objects, with theoretical activity, teaching and editorial work, the humanistic, meaningful and territorial component of art and design."
