Hans Wiger (1932-2015) - Moonlit Coast

This atmospheric graphic work by Swedish artist Hans Wiger depicts a dramatic coastal landscape under a large rising moon. A rocky shoreline, windswept vegetation and figures by the water create a quiet but slightly mysterious atmosphere. The expressive brushwork and strong contrasts between the dark rocks, blue sea and pale moon give the composition a distinctive, almost dreamlike quality.


Hans Wigert (1932–2015) was one of Sweden’s prominent contemporary nature artists. His work was strongly influenced by the Swedish landscape, particularly the rugged nature of northern Sweden. He was known for depicting nature and people with an expressive and economical style, using bold lines, simplified shapes and strong contrasts. His landscapes often combine observation with an emotional and almost poetic interpretation of nature.

Wigert initially studied briefly at Konstfackskolan in Stockholm, but left the school to travel to Spain, where he continued his artistic development through independent study. After returning to Sweden, he studied under Staffan Hallström at Gerlesborgsskolan in 1959, and subsequently studied drawing with Bror Marklund and painting under Evert Lundquist at the Royal Institute of Art (Kungliga Konsthögskolan) in Stockholm from 1959–1965. He also undertook study trips to France, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain.

His artistic practice included painting, drawing and graphic art, particularly drypoint. Nature was a central subject throughout his career, and his works often portray landscapes, figures and human presence with a mixture of romanticism and expressionism. Grundsunda on the Swedish coast became an important place for his artistic work, serving as his summer residence for around 30 years.
