Claudia Stella (1636-1697), after Nicolas Poussin - Cristo

This superb composition describes the solemn and dramatic moment of Jesus led before the judging authority, translating into a masterful graphic framework the classicist invention of Nicolas Poussin. The scene is structured with a strict perspective and hierarchical arrangement on two levels: in the upper part, beneath a majestic draped canopy, the sovereign sits on a throne assisted by counselors and by a scribe busy recording the interrogation; in the lower part, beyond the marble balustrade, Christ is restrained by armored soldiers with pikes, surrounded by priests and dignitaries who indicate him and accuse him with theatrical and eloquent gestures. The stern setup of the architectures and the calibrated use of light heighten the tragic immobility of the Savior, in contrast to the convulsive dynamic of his accusers.

The exemplary piece offered is an excellent period impression, stamped on heavyweight handmade wove paper. The extraordinary accuracy of the line meticulously describes the rich folds of the togas, the metallic details of the armors, and the strongly characterized faces of the numerous figures, offering a precious testimony to the grand masterful engraving of the French school of the XVII-XVIII centuries.
