For sale is an expressive lithograph after a work by Pablo Picasso from the famous publication Toros y Toreros, published in 1961 by Cercle d’Art in Paris.
The sheet comes from the 1961 edition and, according to the accompanying certificate, was printed at Mourlot in Paris. The Parisian printing house Mourlot is closely associated with Picasso’s lithographic work and is among the most important art print studios of the 20th century.
The composition combines, in a dense, expressive form, various motifs from the world of Spanish bullfighting: bullfighters, riders, bulls and other figurative elements overlap to form a dynamic image field characteristic of Picasso.
The theme of bullfighting occupied Picasso for decades and forms an important motif complex of his oeuvre. Toros y Toreros is one of the well-known publications in which this intense engagement with the corrida, bull, and bullfighter is documented.
