Jan Mankes (1889-1920), after - Twee Ganzen

Jan Mankes was born on 15 August 1889 in Meppel, the son of Beint Mankes, a civil servant at the tax authority, and Jentje Hartsuiker. He went in 1902 to the hbs in Meppel but abandoned it when the family moved to Delft in 1904. During that period he worked as an apprentice with the glass painter J.L. Schouten and attended evening courses at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague.
