Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002) was a French-American artist who became known for her colorful and striking works. She worked as a painter, sculptor and filmmaker, among other things. Especially her Nana’s, large and vividly colored sculptures of women, made her famous. In her art she often used cheerful colors and playful shapes, but behind that cheerful appearance she sometimes addressed serious topics, such as the position of women and social norms.
