Mario Avati (1921-2009) was a French painter and engraver born in Monaco. Trained at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, he first practiced all printmaking techniques. From 1957, he dedicated himself almost exclusively to the noir manner. He became the undisputed master of this demanding technique in the 20th century. His rigorous work mainly revolves around still lifes. His masterpieces are today in the world’s leading collections.
La manière noire (or mezzotinto) is a technique of intaglio printmaking on metal, primarily copper. Invented in the 17th century, it is distinguished by its inverted process: the artist works from black toward white.
