The series of "Heads" and the "Executed": The Man is part of a major body of works from this period (including the series Hostages, Unknown Soldiers, or the Executed). Pierre Dmitrienko (1925–1974) was a French painter, printmaker, and sculptor born in Paris to a Russian father and a Greek mother. After studying architecture at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, he turned to painting and abstract art in the 1940s. His style evolved from a Cubist-influenced period toward a more lyrical abstraction, then toward darker and more austere works.
