Born in Dijon, Jean Bertholle (1909-1996) was a major French painter and printmaker of the Nouvelle École de Paris.
Formed at the Beaux-Arts of Lyon and Paris, he cofounded in 1936 the Lyonnais group Témoignage alongside the artist Étienne-Martin.
His style evolves constantly, sensibly oscillating between poetic non-figuration and a marked return to figuration.
A prolific creator, he also distinguished himself in monumental art through the creation of stained glass, tapestries and frescoes.
