This masterwork occupied Chagall for two long years. The septuagenarian artist became passionate about this prestigious commission and inscribed himself forever in the work with his self-portrait at the palette beside the Eiffel Tower (see photo).

This work was issued for the portfolio commemorating the realization and inauguration of the Paris Opera House ceiling by Marc Chagall in 1964. It is annotated: First color maquette, not retained.
