Description from the seller

Bernard Buffet — Portrait of François Mauriac, 1966

Original black etching on paper depicting the writer and French Academician François Mauriac (1885–1970).

This frontal portrait exhibits all the characteristics of Bernard Buffet's graphic language: incisive black lines, emaciated face, deeply expressive gaze, and the angular construction of the figure.

The plate’s well is clearly visible around the composition, attesting to a intaglio impression. The work bears the signature “Bernard Buffet” as well as the date “66” on the plate, to the right of the portrait. Unsigned and unnumbered print, not hand-signed.

The paper has been previously mounted onto a gray board.

Condition: general yellowing of the paper, foxing, small stains, and superficial age-related traces. The mounting board shows marks and some detachments on the reverse. The work is offered in its current state, as visible in the photographs.

Technique: etching / intaglio
Paper: laid
Sheet dimensions: approx. 55 × 37 cm
Image dimensions: approx. 40 × 27 cm

Period/edition impression.

Condition report

The paper shows general yellowing, some foxing, small stains, and superficial age-related traces. The engraving itself is neither torn nor lacuna. It has been previously mounted on a gray board, which on the reverse shows marks and some detachments without affecting the work’s integrity. Sold in its current state, in accordance with the photographs.
