Biography
Born in Tripoli in 1937. In Rome, after completing artistic studies, he attended the courses at the Academy of Fine Arts. In the capital he made his debut with a solo show at the La Feluca gallery (1958). A year later he exhibited at the VIII Quadriennale di Roma, where he would return in 1972, 1986 and 1999. In 1961, with the painters Attardi, Farulli, Gianquinto, Guccione, Vespignani, and the critics Micacchi, Del Guercio and Morosini, he founded the group “Il pro e il contro.” In 1964 he took part in the Venice Biennale. In 1979 the Italian Cultural Institute in Vienna dedicated to him a graphic retrospective. Two years later he exhibited at the Olivetti Center in Mexico City and, in 1982, at the Aalto Museum in Jyväskylä (Finland). After solo shows in galleries in Rome (1985) and Milan (1985), Ennio Calabria exhibited at Gucci’s Gallery in New York (1985). 1987 is the year of his great retrospective at Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome. In 1992 he participated in the International Exposition in Chicago and two years later he exhibited at the Palazzo dei Papi in Viterbo. After the solo devoted to the cycle La sintassi della strada at the Civic Museum of Chieti (2002), in 2004 he presented the series of portraits of Giovanni Paolo II at the Museo Vittoria Colonna in Pescara and at the Reggia di Caserta. His works are present in numerous public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Pushkin Museum in Moscow and the Gucci Collection. Ennio Calabria resides and works in Rome. He died on March 1, 2024.
