Vision of Ezekiel ｜ Marc Chagall

This work is based on the divine vision described in Ezekiel, Chapter 1, Verses 4–14 of the Old Testament. Commissioned by art dealer Ambroise Vollard, it is an important plate (Plate 104) from Marc Chagall's extensive print series "La Bible" (105 total works), created between the 1930s and 1950s. During the Babylonian Captivity, the prophet Ezekiel witnesses the heavens opening along the Chebar River and beholds a grand manifestation of God. Centered in the composition are the "four living creatures (Tetramorph)" encountered by Ezekiel, each having four wings and the faces of a human, a lion, an ox, and an eagle. These creatures later became important motifs associated with the symbols of the four Evangelists in the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). Raised in a devout Jewish family, the Old Testament was Chagall's own origin. Having survived turbulent times including two World Wars, Nazi persecution, and the death of his beloved wife Bella, his depictions of the biblical world embody deep prayer and wishes for spiritual salvation.

Artist Profile:
Marc Chagall was born in Russia in 1887 and passed away in 1985. Although Jewish, he later obtained French citizenship. After studying at Léon Bakst's art school, he moved to Paris in 1910, incorporating scenes from his hometown into his works. Returning to Russia in 1914, he was briefly involved in art administration after the revolution, but returned to Paris in 1922. Retrospectives were held at the Kunstmuseum Basel in 1933, the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946, and the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris in 1947. He moved to the United States during World War II and returned to France in 1947. Further retrospectives took place at the Kunsthaus Zürich in 1950, in Tokyo and Kyoto in 1963, and in Zürich and Cologne in 1967 celebrating his 80th birthday. Painted in vivid blues, reds, and yellows, flowers, animals, and embracing lovers fly through the air defying gravity. Having lived through the Spanish Civil War, the Holocaust, and two World Wars, he sought to create a myth of eternal love. In addition to oil paintings, he worked on illustrations, prints, and stained glass, earning acclaim as one of the defining artists of the 20th century. The Marc Chagall Museum is located in Nice.
