“Complementary Portrait” is a 100 × 70 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García.

The work features a female portrait constructed from an intense chromatic opposition. The face occupies practically the entire composition and is visually divided between warm tones —reds, oranges and yellows— and a cool range of blues and turquoises. This duality makes color the true protagonist of the painting.
The use of complementary colors generates a strong visual vibration. The orange and the blue oppose each other and, at the same time, balance both on the face and in the background and clothing. The shapes appear simplified through large chromatic surfaces bounded by dark lines, reinforcing the graphic and expressive character of the figure.

The frontal and serene gaze of the protagonist introduces a counterpoint to the intensity of the color range. The background, also divided between deep blues and fiery reds, prolongs the opposition present in the face and makes the figure and space function as a single color structure.
