"L'Emerillon"
The Merlin, or Falco columbarius. This small falcon species of the Northern Hemisphere, colloquially known in North America as the pigeon hawk («falco dei piccioni»).
This work is in excellent condition, on laid paper with good margins and a refined watercolor coloration.

1760
Original copperplate engraving on copper plate engraved by B. de Bakker, Dutch engraver of the eighteenth century
Jacques Eustache de Sève (1742-1788) was a French illustrator renowned for his detailed drawings and engravings of animals, which reflect the Enlightenment style and the transition toward Neoclassicism, characterized by scientific precision, realism, and elegant compositions, often used for encyclopedic works such as Diderot's Encyclopédie.
His work fits into the scientific fervor of the eighteenth century, with the aim of documenting the natural world, typical of the great illustrated works of the era.
Despite the scientific nature, the compositions are often balanced and pleasing, with minimal backgrounds that focus attention on the animal.
