Born in 1925 in New York (the Bronx), Yitzroch Loiza Grossbergvit lived and worked in New York. He first studied music at the Juilliard School in New York (1944-1945), where he befriended Miles Davis and became a jazz saxophonist under the pseudonym Larry Rivers. From 1947 to 1951, he studied art with Hans Hofmann and then took art history courses at New York University.
His first solo exhibition took place in 1949. In the early fifties he reintroduced figuration into American painting, then offered a very personal version of Pop Art by subverting the codes of great paintings that have marked art history, such as Courbet's The Burial at Ornans or Manet's Olympia.
Larry Rivers died in August 2002 in Southampton, United States.
