Corneille, Vrouw met vogel, a signed and dated 1997 lithograph (158/200) in a limited Cobra edition from the Netherlands, 38 × 28 cm, in good condition, sold by Galerie.
Description from the seller
This lithograph by Corneille, signed and dated 1997 and numbered 158/200, depicts a stylized female figure with a bird pressed close to her body. The representation is predominantly executed in black and gray, with bright yellow accents that make the face, hair, and the bird stand out even more. The powerful, loose lines and simplified forms give the work a spontaneous and expressive feel. The woman and the bird, two common motifs in Corneille’s oeuvre, appear here almost to merge with one another. This creates an intimate and imaginative composition in which human and nature are closely connected.
Corneille was the artist's name of Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo (1922–2010), born in Liège and one of the leading Dutch artists associated with the CoBrA movement. Along with, among others, Karel Appel and Constant, he belonged to the experimental artists who, after World War II, sought a free and spontaneous way of making art. Corneille drew inspiration from, among other things, children's drawings, nature, people, and his many travels. Later he developed a very recognizable, colorful visual language in which especially women, birds, and celestial bodies frequently appear. In addition to paintings and drawings, he produced a lot of graphic work, which brought his art to a wide audience.
