Corneille, full name Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo (1922–2010), was a Dutch artist born in Liège. In 1948 he was one of the founders of the international artists’ group CoBrA, together with artists such as Karel Appel and Constant. The CoBrA artists sought to work spontaneously and freely, drawing inspiration from children’s drawings and non-Western art. Corneille later developed a highly recognizable style with clear colors, strong black lines, and recurring motifs such as women, birds, cats, flowers, and landscapes. His work often has a cheerful, liberated, and imaginative appearance.
