ost Amman (1539–1591) – Stag Hunt in Water – Original Woodcut – 1582
Description
Original 16th-century woodcut attributed to Jost Amman (1539–1591), depicting a dramatic stag hunt in water, printed in Frankfurt am Main in 1582.
The leaf originates from the famous “Neuw Jag vnnd Weydwerck Buch”, printed by Johann Feyerabend and published by Sigmund Feyerabend in Frankfurt in 1582. The Library of Congress records this edition and confirms that part of its illustrations are by Jost Amman. Library of Congress
The lively Renaissance composition depicts several stags attempting to cross a river while being pursued by hunting dogs.
Mounted hunters observe the chase from the bank, while other hunters follow the animals from a boat. A castle and wooded landscape appear in the background.
The woodcut has been hand-coloured. The exact date of the colouring cannot be established with certainty and it may be contemporary or later.
This is an original printed book leaf, not a modern reproduction. The sheet is printed on both sides. The illustrated side bears page number 147 and the heading “Vom Jagen”. The reverse contains further original hunting text, page number 142, headed “Erster Theyl”, including “Das 24. Capitel.”
The work is presented in a double-sided frame, allowing both sides of the historic leaf to be viewed.
On the reverse is an old dealer's label from:
Buch- und Kunstantiquariat Hans Marcus, Düsseldorf, Grabenstr. 11a
The historic label identifies the work as:
“Hirschjagd – original Holzschnitt, handkoloriert von Jost Amman 1582.”
