Domenico Campagnola, Arboro di frutti della Fortuna, a Renaissance engraving from the 17th century depicting a historical scene, 50 x 33 cm, made in Italy, in good condition and unsigned, edition I/III with provenance to George Usslaub (Lugt 1221).
Description from the seller
Renaissance wood engraving - Arboro di frutti della Fortuna - vol. 1550 - Prov. Coll. Usslaub (Lugt 1221)
Domenico Campagnola 1500-1564
Cornelis Anthoniesz 1505-1553
Lower part (base of the trunk and crowd of figures) of the monumental mural allegorical engraving Arboro di frutti della Fortuna (Venice / Northern Schools, circa 1550).
Venetian, "L’Arbre de la Richesse" circa 1550. Arboro di frutti della fortuna -
The tree of fruits of wealth (lower half). Wood engraving…
See Aldovini/Landau/Urbini ALU.0054.1-4 1 (of III).
The sheet, formerly attributed to Domenico Campagnola, has recently been attributed to Cornelis Anthonisz. According to recent research by Aldovini, Landau and Urbini, the author who produced the work remains unknown. The current wood engraving is extremely rare and only four complete copies have survived (British Museum, London; Harvard Art/Fogg Museum, Cambridge; Museo Diocesano, Trento and Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Venice).
Printed somewhat later before the addition of the addresses "MG 1550" and "Domenico Campagnola 1517".
A little worn by time and stained, old date at bottom right in brown ink "1616",
vertical central fold, border partly completed by the pen, other signs of handling and a bit dirty, small
remnants of glue, otherwise in overall good condition.
Of the greatest rarity…
Tirage I/III
Collection stamp on the verso George Usslaub (Lugt 1221).
Prestigious provenance: On the verso the collection mark stamped in black ink of George Usslaub (Lugt Reference: L.1221). This provenance documents the work’s passage through his famous Marseille collection dispersed in 1929.
Academic references: Atlante delle xilografie italiane (ALU.0054)
