La Maddalena penitente, an etching by Sir Robert Strange after Guido Reni, 1753, on laid paper, 395 by 295 mm, in good condition, signed on the plate.
Description from the seller
Very beautiful engraving taken from The Penitent Magdalene by Guido Reni, the work of Sir Robert Strange, the Scottish Jacobite engraver who fled to Paris where he worked with Le Bas, before returning to London after a series of travels across Europe, particularly in Italy between Rome and Naples.
A plate trimmed within the border, on laid paper, in good condition, lower-left corner repaired, tear restored along the lower edge and, when viewed by transmitted light, small abrasions visible (see photo).
Below the image, on the left "[Gui]dus Rheni Pinxit Romae", on the right "Robertus Strange delineavit et sculpsit Londini", in the center "Miserere mei Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam" (Salm. 51), further down a two-line dedication to the Dowager Princess of Wales.
Missing, because trimmed along the lower edge, are two lines with the date "1753" and the author's excudit.
Depicted is Saint Mary Magdalene, Penitent, who raises her tearful gaze while removing the pearls from her hair, a vase of ointment, and an open book on the table in front of her.
Le Blanc, 16.II.
