André Lanskoy (1902-1976) is a Russian-born painter of the Paris School, a major figure in lyrical abstraction. Born into Russian nobility, he fled the 1917 revolution and settled permanently in Paris in 1921 after a stopover in Constantinople. Initially influenced by primitivism and James Ensor's painting, during his early period he produced intimate scenes, landscapes, and still lifes with dark, textured colors. Noticed by collector Wilhelm Uhde in 1924, he regularly exhibited and befriended other émigré artists like Soutine. From the late 1930s, his painting gradually moved away from figuration under the influence of Kandinsky and Klee. He fully pivoted to abstraction around 1944, becoming one of the pioneers of informal art in Europe through large luminous compositions. His style is characterized by thick matter worked with a knife or brush and a constant exploration of chromatic interactions. A prolific artist, he also explored other artistic media throughout his career, such as tapestry, illustrated rare books, lithography, and collage. He died in Paris in 1976, leaving behind a powerful body of work celebrated worldwide for its visual poetry and color mastery.
