A rare homogeneous set of seven original 16th‑century intaglio engravings titled Maschere Grottesche, drawn by Cornelis Floris and masterfully etched by Frans Huys, 1555, 22.5 × 17 cm, produced in Belgium under the Classical style, in good condition and shipped in a rigid professional box.
Description from the seller
Rare homogeneous ensemble of seven original burin engravings on 1555 dating paper, originating from the famous series "Pourtraicture ingenieuse de plusieurs façon de Masques", published in Antwerp by the publisher Hans Liefrinck. The subjects were designed by Cornelis Floris de Vriendt II and masterfully engraved by Frans Huys during the Flemish Renaissance.
These exceptional late-Mannerist grotesques fuse human, vegetal and marine elements within the renowned ornamental "auricular" style, characterized by sinuous forms that recall ear cartilage. It is one of the very first European examples of this genre, which strongly influenced the development of the Baroque and Art Nouveau. The original series is extremely rare and incomplete sets are today preserved in prestigious museums such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the MAK in Vienna.
The prints are impressed on contemporary sixteenth-century paper and present in generally good condition for the period. They show the usual signs of time, light foxing and trimmed margins that do not compromise the clarity of the finely engraved linework. Splendid lot for collectors of ancient graphic art or Wunderkammer. The work will be shipped with professional rigid packaging.
