Rare set of four original engravings from 1671 titled Cartigli Barocchi, by Federico Zuccari and Robert White, made in aquaforte on period paper in Italy, 22.5 by 17 cm, XVII century, in good condition, sold by owner or dealer and shipped by courier.
Description from the seller
Rare homogeneous set of four original engravings from 1671, from the sought-after suite titled "A New Booke of Variety of Compartments," published in London by John Overton. The works show refined designs for cartouches enriched with putti, fruit garlands, wreaths, and mascarons, deftly engraved by the famous English master Robert White drawing from the ornamental invention designs of the renowned Italian painter Federico Zuccari.
These prints are a remarkable and early example of the application of Baroque taste and the auricular ornamental style in Northern European graphic art of the seventeenth century. Each sheet presents a central space deliberately left blank, historically intended so that painters, silversmiths, sculptors, and engravers could insert dedications or personalized noble crests.
Surviving exemplars of this same famous series are today jealously kept at prestigious institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The plates are printed on sturdy contemporary period paper and are in generally good condition, showing only slight and natural signs of time perfectly consistent with the era of the work.
Dimensions 17 x 22.5 cm
