Potter was baptized on November 20, 1625 in Enkhuizen in the United Republic of the Netherlands.
He studied painting with his father Pieter Potter in Enkhuizen. In The Hague he met his wife and became acquainted with the Dutch elite. He later moved to Amsterdam. There Potter was invited by the famous physician Nicolaes Tulp, to whom he painted a portrait of his son Dirck Tulp. In 1646 he became a member of the painters’ guild.
Although his artistic life was brief, it was very intense; Potter painted more than 130 paintings.
He died in 1654, aged 28, of tuberculosis. He was buried on 17 January 1654 in Amsterdam.
He devoted himself to landscape painting, notably Italian landscapes, and to portraiture. He produced engravings from his drawings or from works by other artists, also using the chiaroscuro technique known as the black manner.
