Adriaan van Esveld presents the hand-signed limited edition woodcut Gitarist en toehoorders (2003), in Expressionism, edition 37/50, image size 22 x 28 cm and framed size 43 x 47 cm, origin Netherlands and sold by Galerie.
Description from the seller
In this woodcut from 2003, Adriaan van Esveld brings a small audience together around a guitarist. The strong contrast between deep black and bright white gives the piece a pronounced, almost monumental character. With relatively simple, firmly cut lines Van Esveld convincingly depicts both the body positions and the listeners' attention. The scene seems ordinary, but because virtually all surrounding details have been omitted, the encounter takes on a timeless and enigmatic quality. Precisely that isolating of ordinary human actions is characteristic of his work: the artist does not provide a fixed story, but lets meaning arise through looking.
Adriaan van Esveld (Soest, 1947) is a Dutch visual artist who trained at the Academy for Visual Arts in Arnhem, the current ArtEZ. He works with varied techniques, including painting, drawings, woodcuts and wood engravings, and occasionally makes sculptures. In his figurative work, people are often central, doing seemingly ordinary things, while it remains unclear what exactly happens. Van Esveld places great importance on omission, composition and atmosphere. His tranquil landscapes also do not have to be naturalistic: the experience and mood of a place are more important to him than a precise rendition. He currently lives and works in Velp.
