Jeroen Molenaar, Cancun, Mexico, a 2009 C‑print measuring 75 by 50 cm, hand‑signed, in the Kunstfotografie genre and sold by Galerie.
Description from the seller
This photo focuses attention on an industrial environment that, due to the chosen crop, becomes almost abstract. The large reddish-brown roof plane forms the background for a tangle of black cables, pipes, insulators and technical installations. Especially the strong contrast between the warm red, the black lines and the white equipment gives the image a pronounced graphic character. The cables run in different directions through the composition and create a rhythmic play of lines, while the repetition of technical forms provides coherence. By completely omitting any human presence, the attention shifts from the function of this place to its unexpected visual qualities: an everyday technical landscape thus becomes a game of color, structure, lines and geometric forms.
Jeroen Molenaar (Zwolle, 1979) is a Dutch visual artist who studied at ArtEZ-CABK in Kampen from 2000 to 2004. In his work he mainly investigates space, architecture and perspective. He often starts from elements from urban or rural environments – lines, constructions and spatial structures – which he abstracts and distorts. This means that what is initially recognizable, such as the markings at Cancun Airport on an airport runway, can transform into a game of geometry and depth. In addition to photography Molenaar creates paintings and spatial objects; in these as well he uses shifting lines and perspective distortions to mislead the viewer’s perception. His fascination with architecture and the way in which individual components together form a spatial construct runs as a common thread through his oeuvre.
